Green Street Green is the name of the village in which the church is at the heart. Who knows how they arrived at that name however many hundreds of years ago, but at least that's where the church's name comes from.
When biographers review the lives of the handful of extraordinary people in the history of the world, they are often able to characterize these individuals with an overarching theme, a banner, or mission statement of sorts. The same may be said of Jesus, who took for himself Isaiah 61:
The Spirit of the Sovereign LORD is on me, because the LORD has anointed me to preach good news to the poor. He has sent me to bind up the brokenhearted, to proclaim freedom for the captives and release from darkness for the prisoners, to proclaim the year of the LORD's favor and the day of vengeance of our God, to comfort all who mourn, and provide for those who grieve in Zion-- to bestow on them a crown of beauty instead of ashes, the oil of gladness instead of mourning, and a garment of praise instead of a spirit of despair. They will be called oaks of righteousness, a planting of the LORD for the display of his splendor. (vv. 1-4; cf. Lk 4:18-19)
The Amateur Surgeons are those who are willing to pick up the call and continue this same mission; those who desire to see the poor receive good news, the broken made whole, and to see prisoners set free. The Amateur Surgeons are those people who work for the day in which all things will be restored and even made more glorious than the original plan. If you recognize the same call, you are free to join the Amateur Surgeons Association (2 Pet 3:13; Rev 21:1).
